You should never let your air conditioner run all the time
Your HVAC not only gets damaged quicker the more it is used, but your electricity bills also shoot up.
However...
It really does depend on what you consider as 'all the time'.
Let's simplify.
What's Causing My HVAC to Run Regularly?
A number of issues can cause your HVAC to run constantly, which include:
1. Air Circulation is Blocked.
Your HVAC system needs consistent and undisrupted air flow for it to work properly.
If the airflow to or from your HVAC is blocked, the system is going to struggle to work which means it'll be more likely to just keep running.
Things that can limit airflow to your HVAC:
You can check the airflow by holding your hand near an open-air vent. You should feel the air blowing.
2. Unclean Evaporator Coils.
Refrigerant goes through the evaporator coils and absorbs the warmth from the air in your home. When the evaporator coils are clean, this is a breeze.
But the more dirt and gunk develop on the evaporator coils, the tougher it is for the cooling agent to absorb warmth. All those layers create an obstacle, and your HVAC continues to run even though your home won't feel any cooler.
In fact, your system will do the reverse of its designated function, with your HVAC unit blowing out warmer air as opposed to cold air.
3. There's a Cooling agent Leakage.
When you don't have a sufficient cooling agent, your HVAC runs all the time.
Refrigerant is never supposed to run out or require topping up. The only time that's needed is when there's a leakage.
4. Your Air conditioner is Old and Needs to Be Replaced.
An HVAC doesn't work well forever. A lot of air conditioners that receive annual maintenance last roughly 15 years. After that, it's time for an upgrade.
As it ages, your HVAC system will need to work harder to provide you with the same results. An air conditioner that runs regularly, and is over ten years old needs to be replaced as constantly fixing it will cost you a lot of money.
5. Your Air Conditioner is the Wrong Dimension.
This is usually a bitter pill to swallow because there's only one method to repair it.
An HVAC unit that is too small for your residence will have to run continuously to keep your home cool which leads to even more wear and tear on your air conditioner. More damage = a lot more repair work as well as a shorter lifespan.
We've seen it countless times. Rather than getting a specialist home consultation, homeowners are simply offered the exact same dimension HVAC system they had before in the current model which isn't always effective.
