6 Benefits of Boiler Systems

Tori Klein • November 3, 2022

Now that November has arrived, you've probably turned on your heating system.

Picture of a man thinking with a pen on his chin.

Now is the time to invest in a dependable home heating system if you don't already have one. There is a vast variety of heating systems on the market nowadays. The heating season is upon us, so let's examine boilers, how they function, and the benefits one might offer you.

Boilers

There are numerous ways a boiler system differs from a conventional forced air system. The hot water from the boiler is pumped to all the various rooms, rather than being heated and released into the air. Each heated room in the house has a network of pipes put in the subfloor.

Baseboard heaters and radiators are devices with terminals connected to the network. Water is circulated through a heat exchanger when the boiler's thermostat is set to the "on" position. After being heated, the water is distributed throughout the house via a system of pipes. Pipes buried beneath the floor transmit heat into the room as water circulates.

If you are worried about the efficiency of your current home heating system or are just ready for a change, it may be time to consider upgrading to a high-efficiency system. Find out the many uses for boilers and why they are a popular heating option.

How does a boiler heating system work?

The water in a boiler system is heated, and then the warm water is distributed around the room using radiators. The system uses a heat exchanger to heat water spread throughout the home via pipes and radiators to warm the house. At the same time, the water is redirected to the boiler to be recycled and heated.

Boiler Heating Systems:

Boilers are a common form of heating for residential and commercial buildings, and several different models are available. Here is a rundown of the most frequent ones.

  • Steam Boilers: Steam is produced when water is heated in a boiler. The steam is distributed via the home's radiators, and the condensed water is recycled back into the boiler.
  • Hot Water Boilers: Radiators and baseboards heat from hot water pumped through the boiler.
  • Natural Gas Boiler: The fuel of choice for these boilers is natural gas. The gas-fired system heats the water in the tank via a pilot light that is constantly on.
  • Electric boilers: These days, they are the norm since they are more cost-effective and less harmful to the environment than their gas and oil counterparts.
  • Oil Boiler: When oil is used to heat water, the device is termed an oil boil or oil-fired boiler. Due to a lack of pipelines carrying natural gas to the region, these are more prevalent there. An oil boiler receives its fuel from a dedicated oil tank, which heats water to circulate through the pipes or generate hot air.
  • Condensing Boiler: The water in a home with a condensing boiler is heated twice: once before it enters the radiator and when it is recirculated through the pipes and back into the house.

The Pros of Using a Residential Boiler Heating System

Boiler heating systems are typical for a reason. Consider the following advantages and reasons why they are important for your home's heating system.

  • Method of heating that does not contribute to the spread of dust and other allergies. There is no need for additional ventilation when using a boiler system because the heat is emitted directly into the surrounding air. It is common for dust and allergens to become airborne in forced-air systems as the newly heated air mixes with the previously uncontaminated air.
  • A boiler system provides warm, high-quality heat that is convenient and comfortable. As opposed to being driven through ducting and out a vent, the warmth from a radiator spreads evenly around the space. As a result, the heat from radiators has a more natural, invigorating quality than that of forced air systems, and it is distributed more thoroughly.
  • Zoning and programming options that are simple to use are two significant benefits. Users can set different temperatures for different rooms in the house, considering how those rooms are used. The automated start and stop of heating is another convenient feature made possible by programmable thermostats.
  • Quiet operation is another benefit of boiler systems. The operational noise of a boiler heating system is contained within the boiler, as opposed to the vents of a forced air system. The rest of the system operates with minimal noise.

Many factors affect how long a boiler heating system will last. Keeping the system in peak condition as a high-efficiency version requires regular servicing and upkeep. The average lifespan of a boiler system is 10 years; however, it might be much longer or much shorter. Maintaining a system for the long haul is all about keeping up with routine service and inspections.

Boilers, like forced air systems, need regular checks, maintenance, and even replacement parts to keep working efficiently and for as long as possible. Your current system hardware can be reused if you decide to upgrade.
